Shipping: The Final Chapter of Care

Care Doesn’t End at Checkout
Every animal in our care has already had a routine. Light cycles. Feeding rhythms. Familiar surroundings. Predictability.
Shipping interrupts all of that.
That means every decision we make before a box ever closes needs to reduce stress, not add to it. Sometimes that looks like waiting. Sometimes that looks like rescheduling. Sometimes that means saying “not yet” even when everything else is ready.
Here at Weird is Beautiful, we fast our spiders before shipping.
Why Spiders Are Fasted Before Shipping?
Fasting before shipping is one of the most important safety steps we take. It can sound counterintuitive at first. Feeding feels like care. But for spiders, especially during transport, not feeding is often the safer option. When a spider eats, its body shifts into digestion mode.
During shipping, temperatures fluctuate, movement is constant, and stress levels rise. Digesting prey under those conditions increases the risk of internal injury or abdominal rupture if the spider is jostled. A spider with an empty digestive system is simply safer in transit.
This Is Not Starvation
Jumping spiders are naturally adapted to irregular feeding schedules. In the wild, meals are not guaranteed every day. A short, intentional fasting period does not harm a healthy spider. Instead, it allows the spider’s body to:
Travel without digestive stress
Maintain better internal stability
Reduce the risk of injury during movement
Why We Don’t Rush Shipments
There are days when shipping could happen, but shouldn’t. A sudden temperature swing. A spider preparing to molt. A weather system that looks “fine enough” on paper but chaotic in real transit conditions. Packages don’t travel in straight lines. They sit. They wait. They move through environments we can’t control.
Heat packs and insulation are tools, not magic spells. So we plan. We layer protection. And sometimes we hold orders longer than expected, not because it’s convenient for us, but because it’s kinder for them.
Packing Is an Extension of Husbandry
The way an animal is packed matters. Stability. Ventilation. Insulation. Moisture balance. Shock absorption. Orientation. Every piece has a purpose. Every choice is intentional.
We don’t pack to make things “look nice.” We pack to keep a living being safe through a stressful journey. That means extra time. Extra materials. Extra attention. And yes, sometimes extra cost.
At Weird is Beautiful, we utilize specially curated transport containers. We have discovered that this system provides the safest environment, with optimal insulation and ventilation, while securely supporting spiders during transit. The ventilation feature is both removable and reusable, which is an added bonus for adopters.

The Box Matters More Than People Realize
Shipping safely starts with the box itself. We use approved shipping boxes lined with ½-inch foam on all six sides. Top. Bottom. Left. Right. Front. Back. No shortcuts. This creates a temperature buffer and shock absorption layer that protects against sudden environmental changes during transit.
That foam isn’t decorative. It slows temperature swings, reduces vibration, and gives small bodies a better chance to stay stable while the outside world changes around them.
Shipping puts them in sometimes unpredictable environments. Not by malice but by unpredictability along the shipping route, calling off conveyor belts, broken down delivery vehicles, and plane delays. This can all happen along shipping routes.
A box is not just a container. It’s life support for the duration of the journey.
Why We Don’t “Brown Box”
There are sellers who ship live animals in plain brown boxes with no insulation. Sometimes this is called “Brown Box.” Sometimes it’s done to save cost. Sometimes it’s done from a lack of education. We don’t do that.
A bare box offers no protection against heat, cold, or sudden impact. It leaves animals vulnerable to every delay, every warehouse stop, and every moment spent waiting on a truck or conveyor belt.
Cutting corners on packaging means cutting corners on care. That’s not something we’re willing to do.
Shipping the Right Way, Even When It’s Harder
Live animal shipping comes with rules for a reason. Carrier guidelines, reptile shipper standards, and packaging requirements exist to protect animals in transit, not to make sellers’ lives harder.
We choose to ship within approved guidelines, using proper materials, labeling, and methods, even when that means higher costs, longer prep time, or fewer available shipping days.
We don’t ship “against” the system. We ship responsibly within it. Because doing it the right way is part of the responsibility we accept as breeders and sellers.
Weather Holds Are Protection, Not Delay
We understand how hard waiting can be. Anticipation is part of adoption. But weather holds exist for a reason. Extreme heat. Sudden cold snaps. Delays caused by storms. These aren’t minor inconveniences for small animals. They’re real risks.
Choosing to wait is choosing life over convenience. And we’ll always choose that.
A Shared Responsibility
Shipping safely isn’t something we do alone. It works best when we plan together. When adopters are available on delivery day. When enclosures are ready ahead of time. When boxes are opened promptly and animals are given the quiet space they need to settle.
The journey doesn’t end when the package arrives. It ends when the animal is safely home, warm, secure, and able to decompress.
Embracing the Beauty of Invertebrates
Invertebrates are unique and beautiful creatures. They deserve our care and respect. By understanding the intricacies of shipping and handling, we can ensure that these delicate beings arrive safely at their new homes.
We believe that every step we take in this process is a reflection of our commitment to ethical practices. It’s not just about delivering a product; it’s about nurturing a living being.
Let’s celebrate the beauty of these creatures together. When we embrace our role as responsible keepers, we create a community that values life and promotes ethical treatment.
By choosing to support businesses like Weird is Beautiful, we contribute to a movement that prioritizes the well-being of invertebrates. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these remarkable animals.
Let’s continue to learn, grow, and share our passion for invertebrates. After all, in this journey, we are not just caretakers; we are advocates for a world where every creature is cherished.
In this way, we can ensure that our love for these unique animals shines through in every aspect of their care, including shipping.
